Limit Acess to Your Pages

Posted @ October 27, 2009  |  No Comments  |  Categorized Under: Other

I find many security scripts of great use when developing a directory or for content management. Login Manager 3 is one such, which is quite powerful and if you are a web administrator, then you can manage the website user accounts with much ease. You can create areas that are membership protected, and also prevent any unauthorized access to areas that have been secured.

iLogin is a PHP script that lets you protect parts of your site with password, which visitors can only access if they sign up and give you their details.

RedCMS Login Script lets users register / login / logout, and you can restrict the pages too. This script comes with a few administration controls which lets you change access levels for users. You can even remove users if you want to.

One  script you should watch out for is Simple Authorization PHP Script, which protects web page with password, without using a database. This makes use of PHP and of cookies, for password protection. The great thing about this is that it’s quite simple, both in terms of use and installation. No username is required, just a password – for accessing the page. All you need to do is download the script, configure, and add a line of code to each page which you would like to protect with password.

Also look out for User Management System, a great script that calls for a MySQL database. This lets users register, login, retrieve their password, and even edit their details. This is also easy to work with, and you can customize it as you like. In fact, you can even create areas that are strictly members-only.  For certain niches, look out for PHP Tell A Friend Script – which allows you let visitors recommend your website. You have both email layout and HTML layout, and they are easily customizable. Plus, many security features are added, which prevent spam and abuse.

Monetize Blogs

Posted @ December 11, 2008  |  No Comments  |  Categorized Under: Blogs, Other

Blogging is a lot of work if you are up at night writing and researching for three hours. It does take a lot of time, I will not deny that. Here are a few tips to maximize your blog’s potentials.

  • Drive Traffic to Your Blog

Organic traffic from search engines is what you’re always suppose to be focusing on. Work with your main keyword, search this keyword in search engines and advertise on the top sites you see on the list. Search engines love fresh content, be sure to update your blog daily with new content.

Link Exchanges
Link exchanging is another way of driving traffic and build backlinks without using any of your profits. Search for partners relating to your niche.

Advertising
Always have some money set aside for marketing your blog, my suggestions are to pay for directory submission services to help build your backlink and pagerank. Purchase text link or banner advertising on webmaster sites, such as blogs, forums and such.

  • Keywords only about a specific topic

Say you made a post today about the internet, what would the postmostly talk about? Yes, that’s right - the internet. Blog posts would mainly only talk about one thing, it would be easier for search engines to determine its theme thus making it rank higher than a webpage talking about both the internet and music piracy.

  • Keyword Density

Not many people would like to read 1000 words for a blog post each day, thats why posts are so short, so having the post only talking about one subject means that you have a good chance of a high keyword density.Having keyword rich titles give search engines a good overview of your site and also increases your keyword prominence (how early a keyword appears in text).

  • Permalinks

Having your URLs as www.yourblog.com/blogpost-title or www.yourblog.com/blogpost_title is more search engine friendly
than having www.yourblog.com/?p=123. Most blogging systems (like Wordpress) gives you the ability to change this.

  • Subscriptions

Services such as BlogLet allows you to generate a form for your visitors to subscribe to your blog.
Everytime you update with a new entry, your subscribers receives an email notification.

  • TrackBacks

So what are trackbacks?
Trackbacks, also known as pingbacks is a method in blogs that enables automatic cross-references between weblog articles.
For example, if someone writes an entry on the importance of water, and you have a related article base on the topic, you can point your entry link to the article you just viewed. This way readers can read your piece too via the link submitted.

  • Ping

Ping.in is a blog ping service that pings or notifies weblog services and blog directories that your blog has been updated. Thus enabling them to index your blog fast and make your content available for a larger audience.

Mozilla Firefox: The Basics

Posted @ December 7, 2008  |  No Comments  |  Categorized Under: Other

Firefox is a great internet browser program that has taken over the market. Internet explorer, one of its main competitions is not as popular as the internet browser Firefox. Many are using Firefox nowadays instead of the original Internet Explorer. Many people also say that Firefox is a better internet browser than Internet Explorer; but that’s just an opinion. There are pros and cons to both browsers.

Firefox is created by Mozilla so it is also sometimes known as the Mozilla Firefox. This internet browser was descended from the Mozilla Application Suite and managed by the Mozilla Corporation. Unlike Internet Explorer, Firefox had tabbed browsing which allowed easier internet surfing with one application running but multiple tabs. Another great internal function is the spell checker, this was new to the internet browser industry but now when you use Firefox and make a typing mistake, just like Microsoft word there will be a list of suggested corrections. Also there is a download manager included. Another great feature is that there is an integrated search system that uses whatever the user?s choice of a search engine.

These are not the only functions of Firefox but Mozilla had opened it to allow add-ons from third party developers. There are over 2,000 add-ons for Firefox as of now and still growing. Some of these add-ons include the FoxyTunes which controls music player, Adblock Plus, blocking unwanted ads and much more.

As Firefox is a very popular browser, Mozilla had not stopped and created Firefox 2. Just like the original Firefox, Firefox 2 brought many surprises. Although we know that this will not be the end as Mozilla had started to test out version 3. The first version ever made of Mozilla Firefox is the Phoenix, after that was the Mozilla Firebird, this slowly turned to the Mozilla Firefox and then Mozilla Firefox 2.

The Mozilla Firefox 3 had entered its test phase at around April 2008. In version 2.0, a great new feature which created more people to start using Firefox was the session restoration. This means that when the browser crashes and you have several tabs open, you are now allowed to restore those tabs when you open Firefox again. No surprises there, Mozilla firefox will never stop. The current version of Firefox is more stable and had many security fixes.

Firefox?s market share of the web browsers had never stopped growing. Unlike its other competitors such as Safari, Opera, Netscape, Mozilla Firefox has been growing at a fast rate like never seen before. Firefox 2, the current version takes up 17.84% of the web browsers market share not including Internet Explorer. Total of all Mozilla Firefox versions, it had taken up 17.83% of the browser market that are non-Internet explorer.

Overall, Mozilla Firefox now in version 2 had a great impact on the web browser industry. More and more people are now using it as it is probably the best internet browser with the fasting rising popularity out there. With its many great features and security, it?s no doubt why people would choose to use Firefox rather than the other browsers. A free web browser with over two thousand add-ons to date.

Get The Most Out Of Forum Signatures

Posted @ November 4, 2007  |  646 Comments  |  Categorized Under: Other

With every link building method that you choose to use, there are always ways to maximize their effect. The same goes with link building with forum signatures. Posting in certain threads in forums allows you to maximize the effect of your link building campaign. Some threads give you more link juice to your site, and others may give you more exposure and views to forum participants.

Topics that give more link juice:

We all understand that some forums use the no follow attribute on their signatures (ex. digitalpoint), but for forums that do not, the following should be considered.

? Sticky threads: They are just two links away from the home page at all times. They are featured first on all the pages of the forums that they belong to. And sometimes can manage to get a good PR. You can either create very helpful guides that can become sticky threads or you can simply post a comment in these threads.

? Threads that are linked to a lot by bloggers: When you see a thread that breaks the news or is talked about a lot in the blogosphere, don’t forget to leave a comment. Some of its PR will leak to your site.

Topics that will give you a high exposure:

? Threads about earnings: especially when started by someone that has a high monthly income. They tend to get a lot of views and comments, and if you’re the first to reply, you’re going to get some extra exposure.? How to posts: Posts that explain something in detail and they do it well. There are a lot of different guides to link building and monetization in the webmaster forums, but not all bring something new to the table. Pick those that reveal a new method of making money or getting links, and you got a better chance of getting your link seen, if you’re one of the first to comment.

? Don’t just reply, open new threads yourself. If you can open a conversation on a certain topic, do it. And if you make it interesting you’ll gain more exposure than by just replying in threads.

Also, remember to try to make useful comments by replying with something that may contribute to the discussion.

Deleting .pureftpd-upload Files

Posted @ October 14, 2007  |  1 Comment  |  Categorized Under: Other

Do you come upon these .pureftpd-upload files often while uploading files? The files, that for example, show as pureftpd-upload.43fbc128.15.3fa0.ff38da9f, are set to a permission that you can not overwrite in FTP. Neither can you delete the file nor the folder it is in. Usually, these .pureftpd-upload files are only temporary and will disappear after a while.

But if you want to remove them, there are several way to do this. The simplest way that many users miss is simply removing the file in your cpanel.

Here’s how. Go to Cpanel. Then click on File Manager. Browse through the folders where your .pureftpd-upload files are located and click delete.

And your done. That was easy huh?

Link Signatures - Revolutionizing Online Marketing

Posted @ October 4, 2007  |  No Comments  |  Categorized Under: SEO, Other

Signature links are today perhaps one of the best forms of marketing through forums. You write an article and post it in a forum of an article directory or perhaps email the article to interested people and all you do for marketing is to put your link at the end of the article which could direct to your website or your email address.

Signature links help in a way that they help your web page getting spidered by a lot of search engines. The benefit to this is that these search engines index your website and index them faster. So, this is indeed an advantage for a newly launched website.

In case you use signature links in forums, you get a sufficient amount of traffic to your website in case it is relevant to your website. Even if it is not, the signature link gives you a decent amount of viewers and traffic. This, as obvious implies that that you get your website back linked sooner than you can without using this method.

Signature links do not impose on you that you have to use only one single link. In fact you can use some four to five links and promote all your pages at one go. In case all your posts are relevant or have attraction for viewers, at times you could find a huge amount of traffic to your web pages. This indeed is a very good way to advertise the site.

The last point is more than interesting for freelancers. In case you want to make money from signature links, you can always write a number of articles and use different signature links to promote other people?s web pages and earn money as an advertiser.

No wonder the concept of signature links has boosted up the concept of back linking and indeed you should give it a try!

Web Hosting Lures and Traps Revealed

Posted @ September 9, 2007  |  No Comments  |  Categorized Under: Web Hosting, Other

There are thousands of web hosting companies that are sprouting like mushrooms from ever corner of the worldwide web. The challenge is how to know the good ones from the bad ones.

Generally, it’s a person’s instinct to simply choose the cheapest web hosting fee one can find from a long list of web hosting providers. This may be a practical move in your part, but take not that there is a great risk involved if you venture into something without really digging deeply into what these web hosting companies really offer.

  • Understanding “Unlimited” Bandwidth

Web hosting companies brag about unlimited bandwidth when in fact they know that most websites wouldn’t really reach millions of visitors in one day - so they are confident to claim such a thing. Bandwidth simply means the capacity of your site to handle traffic/ visitors. Unlimited bandwidth does not exist. The right tern is “unmetered” bandwidth. But that still sounds quite fishy. The truth is, they can never provide you unlimited bandwidth and if you were to use 900000000gb per month, their server will definitely not be able to handle it. Be aware that there may be a condition in your contract that states that any site that “exceeds”their bandwidth would be shutdown. Now, this is quite contradicting.

  • Where is your server located?

Although it may sound good to hear that your hosting servers are located in the United States or United Kingdom, but it really wouldn’t make a difference if it were hosted in India or Nigeria. Point is, when it comes to how fast a web page can load, your hosting companies’ server location doesn’t matter much. The basic design and the size of your website is the primary factors of your site’s loading speed.

  • Rock Bottom Prices

Always be a little discriminative with cheap web hosting. A simple reseller’s account, a ready-made website template and very cheap hosting fees can really lure someone into buying such service. Make sure that you check all the features you wanted for your website. Support is of prime importance as well. But don?t lose hope. There are still companies who offer cheap web hosting that can stand up for the quality of their service.

  • Small Hosting Companies

Stick with small hosting companies. It is better to host with a small, reliable hosting provider than a large company that is not able to attend to every one of their customer needs. Some hosts are able to do a good job of this but there are only a few out there.

  • Over Selling

Overselling means selling more than what is available or what can be provided. It is common for web hosting companies to sell their customers more than what should be sold. They assume that not everyone will consume all of the bandwidth or space allowed in their account. Most people think this is a bad thing. But in fact, overselling may be a good thing. Here is a great article you can read on why over selling may be good. This can be a bad thing if the web hosting company does not know what they are doing and are not able to keep it under control. So if you hear on a forum that a certain hosting company is currently over selling their plans, don’t be quick to judge and turn away.

Finding a good web host is a challenging feat. With a little background check, you would surely discover if a company is backed up with real testimonials. Reading some web hosting reviews would also help. It’s a good thing that most web hosting companies offer a 30-day money back guarantee so be sure to take advantage of that too.

Deep Links Mod

Posted @ September 2, 2007  |  1 Comment  |  Categorized Under: Other, Directory Related

After the installation of phpLD 3.2 along with a new template for the directory, I started seeing many other directory owners have incorporated the deep links mod into their directory. Apparently, it was a “must have” mod for any paid directory. Many claim that it will drastically increase paid submissions. From what I’ve noticed, it did indeed lure in quite some paid submissions but it wasn’t “mind blowing”, which I can only blame myself for. It is a huge advantage to submitters as it provides them additional backlinks to inner pages and is better for SE indexing. And from looking around webmaster forums, many directory submitters are only looking to submit to paid directories that offers a deep links option. Wouldn’t you like to be one of them?

To download this mod, you can either purchase it from an0n at Digital Point or the phpLD Support Forums. It is quite expensive but very well worth it if you are serious about your directory.

On a low budget (or none at all?)? rakCha offers a free version of the mod. Be sure to look through the entries for other addons.

The downside to rakCha’s free mod is that it does have quite a few bugs in it and you will not receive support as good as what anon will provide. I see some support for the mod carried out in the comments area. You can also try contacting the owner at DP if you have a problem.

An0n’s mod offers 24/7 support and is much more reliable. I believe he also installs the mod on your directory so you save the hassle of fussing over the installation process.

I, for one, am using the rakcha mod. So far, there has been no problems and all the bugs that I’ve encountered have been fixed. I am crossing my fingers that in the future, it will not crash and burn on me. :)
